Monitoring the exhaust gas temp with an EGT Pyrometer Gauge can save you money.

This top end, digital pyrometer exhaust gas temp gauge is Made in the U.S.A. and comes with a Lifetime Warranty. The precise gauge and sensor measures temperatures from 40 to 1850° F. The diesel pyrometer gauges come with a thermocouple and lead wire. The stylized chrome or black bezel gauge fits in either a 3 1/8” or 3 3/8” mounting hole.

Although durable, diesel engines can break down. The most common reasons for early wear on a diesel engine are lack of oil, or putting gasoline in the fuel tank. A close third is high exhaust gas temperature. Nevertheless, diesel trucks and diesel vehicles rarely come with an installed exhaust gas temp gauge also called a pyrometer. When a diesel engine gets overworked, the exhaust gas temp is liable to increase to dangerous levels. A truck pyrometer gauge displays the exhaust gas temperature, informing the driver before diesel engine damage occurs.

Pyrometer is a fancy word for a thermometer that measures extreme temperatures. The engine pyrometer includes a thermocouple, the temperature sensor, which is placed in the truck’s exhaust system. For a diesel truck, the thermocouple is inserted within the exhaust manifold. Or, the EGT thermocouple could be place just past the turbocharger turbine outlet. In this case, exhaust gauge temperature is instead referred to as the turbine outlet temperature. Alternately, if the thermocouple is placed before the turbo charger, the measurement is referred to as turbine outlet temperature. The thermocouple sends its data to the exhaust gas temp gauge located in the truck cab.

Installation of a top end thermocouple with the diesel pyrometer gauge in the exhaust manifold or around the turbocharger is completely safe. Finding the best installation location is based which location is provides the easiest install. When the thermocouple is mounted past the turbine, a diesel engine under strain would likely read between 300 and 200° F less on the exhaust gas temp gauge that if the thermocouple were placed in the exhaust manifold. This difference in temperature is due to heat lost from the exhaust gas in turbocharger. This number varies depending on the both the sum and rate of the exhaust running through the turbo charger. Under light diesel engine strain conditions such as driving under cruise control, with low throttle or pulling an empty trailer, the exhaust gas temp from past the turbine outlet may be as high as five hundred degrees Fahrenheit less than before the turbo. This is due to less exhaust running through the turbine per unit of time. When the diesel engine is running hard too much exhaust gas is running through truck turbo for the temperature to drop much. Thus the diesel pyrometer gauge is usually placed in the exhaust manifold to avoid the discrepancy in the diesel exhaust gas temperatures.

An automotive & diesel thermometer pyrometer measures exhaust gas temp and shows how the hot the internal combustion is running in the engine. The more fuel in the diesel engine in comparison to the oxygen in the engine, the higher the EGT will be that measured by the truck pyrometer. When pulling a heavy load or running at full throttle, the oxygen requirements of the engine increase. A dysfunctional air cleaner, occluded intake hose, high environmental temperatures, high elevation or high water temp can limit the oxygen intake and result in extreme EGT pyrometer readings. A water temp gauge, air filter monitor gauge and outside air temp gauge can all provide clues that the diesel pyrometer gauge will be displaying a dangerously high exhaust gas temp. An automotive & diesel thermometer pyrometer can measure the first signs of engine trouble, while the water temp gauge will display the trouble in a delayed fashion as it takes a time for the coolant system to heat up. Another potential cause for low oxygen intake is if the exhaust system is clogged up. Your engine cannot breather in new air, if it cannot breathe out the old air.
