Most of the heat energy is utilized to crate mechanical power for the drive train. Engines are not efficient, in that a lot of the energy created by combustion escapes the combustion chamber in the form heat. This waster heat must be removed through the engine through air or water flow, and exhaust gases. Thus, all engines need cooling to operate. The water temperature can be utilized to measure the temperature of the engine, and that is why a digital water temp gauge is needed.

The components of an engine melt at a temperature that is lower the temperature created in combustion engines in the combustion chamber. The temperature of the combustion chamber is also high enough to ignite the engine lubricants such as motor oil.
